NATO to seek engagement with China over ‘responsible use’ of military AI

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg announces that the Alliance wishes to ‘strike a deal’ with China over the responsible uses of disruptive technologies, like artificial intelligence, in military affairs. Stoltenberg’s comments come after the Alliance has agreed upon its own AI Strategy outlining the principles for responsible use.

Stoltenberg laid out a potential path in which NATO would ‘engage’ with China on responsible AI, and then, with luck, ‘perhaps agree on some rules of the road for responsible use.’ The problem posed by China’s adoption of AI in military affairs for NATO, and of agreeing on a set of responsible AI rules, is highlighted by the Alliance’s determination that the country poses a ‘systemic challenge.’ It also comes, more optimistically, after more than 60 nations, including China, met in The Hague in February 2023 to deliberate on responsible AI in military affairs and signed a joint ‘Call to Action.’
