Leonardo launches future fighter AI challenge
Italy-based defense and aerospace company Leonardo launches a competition ‘to unearth novel AI technologies for future air combat.’ Carried out in cooperation with the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence (MoD), the Combat Air Artificial Intelligence Challenge seeks applicants from small and medium-sized enterprises, startups, and academia.
Leonardo is looking further afield than using artificial intelligence merely for data processing with onboard sensors. Instead, it seeks machine learning and AI techniques that can act as the ‘nervous system’ of the aircraft and ‘offer the best solutions, better than a top co-pilot possibly could.’ The aim is to ‘optimize’ the processing of data collected by advanced sensors and offload burdens from the human pilot onto the AI with greater speed than conventional jets.
