Artificial Intelligence Marches To The Battlefield

Artificial intelligence is now a reality. Decades of research and promises to this end are yielding concrete results through machine learning and deep learning. These forms of AI are rapidly making their way onto the battlefield.

The AI-enabled warfare effort, and its concomitant ethical concerns, are global. Over sixty nations signed on to a joint ‘Call to Action’ on Responsible AI in military affairs at the REAIM Summit in February 2023. For its part, the United States Department of Defense pursues AI ‘across the board.’ Sensors, weapons, and AI are envisioned to be linked together while autonomous systems become increasingly effective.
