Dstl and DASA research underpins Royal Navy maritime autonomy
Published on January 30, 2023
The United Kingdom’s Royal Navy is moving ahead with plans to research and develop maritime autonomous systems. Thanks in large part to work done by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, in partnership with U.K. industry, such systems are being readied for anti-submarine warfare and other underwater threats.
Uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUVs) equipped with navigation and sensing capabilities were successfully tested off the coast of Portugal. Successes such as this were made possible with technologies from companies including Sonardyne, SprintNav, and MSubs, among others. The U.K. Ministry of Defence seeks greater industry-defense work to this end.
