British Army Develops Autonomous Drone System to Enhance Apache Helicopter Operations

Published on August 18, 2025

The British Army is actively pursuing the development of an autonomous drone system that will complement its fleet of AH-64E Apache attack helicopters. This initiative is part of a broader program known as the Land Autonomous Collaborative Platform (LACP), which is focused on integrating unmanned systems to boost the combat prowess of the military.

Reports indicate that the envisioned drone system will operate with a high degree of autonomy under the guiding principle of being “commanded, not controlled.” This advanced drone is expected to perform a variety of multi-mission tasks within contested battle zones. Its capabilities will range from reconnaissance and target acquisition to strike operations and countermeasure suppression, in addition to seamlessly integrating with Launched Effects (LE). Such a teaming approach is anticipated to enhance both the lethality and survivability of the crewed helicopters while minimizing logistical and maintenance demands.
