Meloni Asks Defense Heavyweights for Plans to Spend EU Cash
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has requested key defense and transport companies to develop plans for spending the money they receive as part of Europe's push to increase its military capabilities. The demands were made during a meeting with the chief executives of Leonardo SpA, Fincantieri SpA, Cassa Depositi e Prestiti SpA, and railway operator Gruppo FS. The plans should identify targets for civilian and military purposes and create jobs. The Italian government wants the companies to focus on dual-use investments with both defense and non-military applications, aligning with those pursued by other European allies. Meloni hopes these investments will create jobs and boost Italy's growth, which is projected to remain below 1% of output this year due to trade tensions with the US. Meloni's move may also indicate a desire to increase voter support, as general elections are due in 2027. Opposition parties have voiced opposition to Europe's push to rearm, arguing for investment in healthcare and education.
