Japanese PM Calls Tech Cooperation Vital to Security

In a keynote speech at Japan’s largest defense trade show, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba emphasized the critical role of international defense cooperation, particularly among allies, in securing peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific. Warning that Asia could face scenarios similar to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, he pointed to China's aggressive actions and North Korea's military involvement abroad as escalating threats. Ishiba highlighted Japan’s support for Ukraine and the need to respond to rapidly evolving military technologies through joint development, production, and equipment transfers. He praised initiatives like the Global Combat Air Program (GCAP), a joint effort by Japan, the U.K., and Italy to develop a sixth-generation fighter jet, as key to long-term security and shared defense innovation.
