Defence giant backs drone ‘with power of Apache gunship’

British startup Hydra Drones has secured significant investment from European missile manufacturer MBDA to advance its development of a modular heavy-lift drone capable of carrying up to 400kg and matching the firepower of an Apache helicopter when deployed in groups. The drone, which can be armed with Brimstone missiles or .50-calibre machine guns, is designed for quick deployment and a range of battlefield roles including logistics, fire support, and potentially casualty evacuation. With backing from MBDA—a joint venture of BAE Systems, Airbus, and Leonardo—Hydra aims to complete a prototype and conduct further trials in 2025. The Army, which has been working with Hydra since 2021, sees the drone as a cost-effective, semi-disposable alternative to manned aircraft for frontline operations.
