Germany triggers EU’s emergency clause for defense spending
Germany has requested the European Union to activate an emergency clause, aiming to significantly increase its defense investment without violating the bloc's spending regulations due to Russia's ongoing aggression against Ukraine and the changed global security landscape. Acting Finance Minister Jörg Kukies emphasized the necessity for a substantial build-up of defense capabilities, which would heavily impact public finances, and advocated for a broader definition of "defense" aligned with NATO standards, potentially including dual-use expenditures, to avoid reallocating funds from other crucial areas. While Germany prioritizes rearmament and has the fiscal capacity, other major European nations are hesitant to increase debt for military spending.
