Saab’s Robert Lindegren on Drone Swarms, Edge AI, and the Future of Autonomous Warfare

Published on March 11, 2025

Amid rising tensions with Russia, Saab and the Swedish Armed Forces have demonstrated a swarm of 10 drones, with NATO Arctic Strike exercises to follow. Robert Lindegren, head of strategy at Saab’s Digital Battlespace Solutions, described his company’s swarm technology to EE Times Europe.

EE TIMES EUROPE: Why is Saab developing and demonstrating swarms of drones now?

Robert Lindegren: The autonomy of flying systems will be crucial for future battlefield unmanned aerial systems. This is [not just] about protecting the human operator but also [means] that the systems themselves should be able to act autonomously to reduce the time from detection to action.

Saab is running several autonomy-related activities where edge AI will be an important enabling technology. In general, autonomy creates the ability to scale capability without the same need of scaling the number of operators.
