Recently, in a series of exit interviews with sources as broad as the Mitchell Institute and Wings Over the Rockies’ Behind the Wings Podcast, outbound United States Air Force (USAF) Secretary Frank Kendall has shared his thoughts on artificial intelligence (AI) and its use in airpower. We at Simple Flying thought we’d share those thoughts with you – especially as they pertain to what is AI, the limits of AI, and what’s next in military aviation - such as the Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA).

USAF Secretary Kendall: “Artificial intelligence is really a collection of technologies.”

In a recent interview with Behind the Wings Podcast’s Tracy LaTourrette – a former USAF F-16 fighter pilot – USAF Secretary Frank Kendall, the senior civilian oversight over the USAF organization, shared that he considered,

“What we call AI, Artificial Intelligence is really a collection of a number of technologies. It's not human-like intelligence, but it's a lot of capabilities that can contribute to our military suite of things that we're trying to do. Autonomy is at the top of that list, probably the ability of machines to operate largely on their own, perhaps with human supervision, but not with direct operation by humans.”
