Australia and the United States team-up on AI

Published on June 14, 2024

In a recent joint activity between the Australian Army and the US Marine Corps at Marine Corps Base Quantico, autonomous uncrewed aerial systems controlled by AI successfully identified and confirmed ground targets in Northern Virginia. The AI-coordinated uncrewed systems relayed target information to a human commander who then issued destruction commands. This event showcased the operational potential of emerging technologies like AI, autonomous systems, loitering munitions, and low-earth orbit satellites for modern warfare. The demonstration emphasized the safe, legal, and effective employment of AI, highlighting its role in minimizing human risk and countering adversary mass. Future collaborations, including further experimentation in Australia, are planned to continue refining these technologies for military applications.
