South Korean Military to Boost Drone Capabilities with New Acquisition Initiative

The South Korean military is ramping up its drone capabilities with a new acquisition project aimed at bolstering its reconnaissance operations.

The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) announced, on April 28, a bid for a small reconnaissance drone acquisition project, with a budget of 29 billion won and a project timeline extending until the end of this year. A project briefing is scheduled for June 5.

The military's focus is on fixed-wing reconnaissance drones, which are known for their higher speeds and longer flight times compared to rotary-wing drones. These drones are also quieter, making them more suitable for reconnaissance missions. The project aims to supply around 30 long-range drones to support the recently established Drone Operations Command.
