In the past year, the Overton window for investing in defence technology has rapidly closed, with VCs and founders funnelling their resources toward building in the national interest. The resurgent interest in defence technology is twofold. First, as the world order continues to fracture, evidenced by conflict in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia, a palpable anxiety pervades the rhetoric of our media and policymakers. Second, defence technologists and their benefactors have been energized by domestic political strife, as the metastasizing anti-American sentiment in our academic, policy, and corporate ecosystems has created an impetus for a new stratum of civil society, one that seeks the restoration of American hegemony on the global stage.
