
OpenAI’s ethics forgotten? Microsoft pitches DALL-E for US military use
DALL-E’s military usage could include training battle management systems and helping identify enemy targets to strike.
The threat from OpenAI’s image generation tool, DALL-E, isn’t limited to creating fake imagery that can go viral online. Instead, the technology can be used to prepare for battle as well.
In a presentation to the Pentagon in October 2023, Microsoft told the Department of Defense how this could be possible.
When OpenAI arrived at the scene, its usage policies mandated that its technology not be used to develop weapons, carry out surveillance, destroy property, or harm people. Since Microsoft injected $10 billion of financial aid into the company, a lot of water has flown under the bridge, and their goals have become more aligned.
