US Wants to Use AI to Set Price for Metals Used in Defense

According to sources cited in Reuters, DARPA is considering bids to build the AI and could make a decision soon

The Pentagon wants to use artificial intelligence to help predict the price of precious metals used in defense technology and safeguard their supply as the U.S. tries to reduce its reliance on foreign sources of these essential components.

The Department of Defense's research wing, DARPA, said in a post to its website in October that it aims to use AI "to increase transparency in critical commodity pricing and supply, demand, and capacity forecasting" for essential metals including cobalt, chromium and germanium. They and other metals are used by the department to make a host of different technologies from jet engines to semiconductor chips.
