NEW YORK (ANN/THE YOMIURI SHIMBUN) – The United Nations on Friday adopted a resolution to promote international rulemaking on weapons that use artificial intelligence to select and kill human targets without human intervention.

This is the first General Assembly resolution related to lethal autonomous weapons systems (LAWS).

The United Nations will accelerate discussions on regulations of such weapons as there is growing concern that they will be put into practical use in war zones.

In the vote on the resolution submitted by Austria, 152 countries, including the Group of Seven industrialized countries such as Japan and the United States, voted in favour of it while four countries, including Russia and India, which have been actively promoting the military use of AI, opposed it. Eleven countries, including China, Israel and Iran, abstained from voting.
