In late August, the Deputy Secretary of Defense (DSD) announced the Replicator initiative where she envisioned DoD producing and deploying thousands of unmanned (maybe autonomous) assets to counter China’s growing numbers advantage.

The Goal: Field attritable, autonomous systems at a scale of multiple thousands in multiple domains within the next 18-to-24 months. This is essentially a production scaling exercise to show that DoD can surge when needed and mobilize the industrial base when faced with major national security challenges. Put another way, it is the 21st century’s version of Freedom’s Forge.
