Scientists dive into better communication

The article discusses the Autonomous Warrior exercise conducted at Jervis Bay, where the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) showcased their underwater projects. This exercise was a controlled environment to test trusted autonomous technologies in and on the ocean. Trusted autonomy is a key priority in the Defence Strategic Review. The exercise focused on the maturity and integration of technology for mission effectiveness. Key challenges addressed included communication between autonomous systems underwater. DSTG tested two main capabilities: the Rock Lobster, an underwater acoustic communication relay system, and a neuromorphic processing capability for underwater sensing. Both systems demonstrated successful operation, with the Rock Lobster relaying information from the United States to an underwater system, and the neuromorphic system deployed on an Ocius BlueBottle for sensing activities. The exercise provided valuable real-world experience and opportunities for DSTG, scientists, engineers, industry, and the Navy to collaborate and see the capabilities in action. The DSTG team emphasized the importance of collaboration with the Navy to meet mission needs and demonstrated the value of these technologies in the maritime domain.
