A humble expert in AI and defence technology joins this year’s Autonomous Warrior

John James, a veteran of the US Army with over five decades of experience, continues to play a pivotal role in advancing defence technology, particularly in the realm of autonomous vehicles and AI. His extensive background includes commanding roles in air defence artillery and light infantry operations, and a distinguished academic career with graduate degrees in electrical engineering. Mr. James has significantly contributed to the development of decision support systems, notably as the Director of the US Army Training and Doctrine Command AI Centre. His expertise extends to human-robot collaboration for threat recognition and small-unit combat operations at the USMA's Robotics Research Centre. Recently, he was instrumental in the SR-Surveyor M1.8 project and the AI Strategic Challenge event at Jervis Bay, which focused on undersea warfare and the development of AI-controlled robotic systems. This event, part of the Technical Cooperation Program, saw collaboration between multiple countries, demonstrating the potential of AI in future force capabilities through multi-agent automatons in contested environments.
