Fugro unveils next-generation coastal mapping system

Fugro unveiled its next-generation coastal mapping system, the Rapid Airborne Multibeam Mapping System (RAMMS 2.0), at the Hydro 2023 conference in Genoa, Italy. RAMMS 2.0, the only airborne Lidar system capable of providing both full water column imaging and high-resolution bathymetry, is designed for precise mapping, monitoring, and modeling of coastal environments, crucial for coastal hazard assessment, marine resource management, coastal engineering, and navigation safety. The key enhancement in RAMMS 2.0 is its dual-laser capability, combined with machine learning, which enhances data accuracy and expedites project delivery. The system was successfully tested in Portugal, mapping a challenging surf zone area using an uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV). The innovation empowers users to unlock the full potential of a single dataset for comprehensive water column characterization, seafloor mapping, habitat understanding, and informed coastal management decisions.
