Published on November 22, 2023

Google Cloud and the UK Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) collaborated on a Large Language Model (LLM) hackathon, as part of their June 2023 memorandum of understanding (MOU) to advance the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in the UK defense sector. The event, held at Google Next, involved over 200 participants, including representatives from the Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Air Force, Space Command, and MOD policymakers, ethicists, and user researchers. Teams worked with Google Cloud's generative AI tools to develop innovative, ethical, and user-centered prototypes aligned with MOD's ethical principles for AI and Google AI Principles. Winning prototypes, addressing defense challenges, were submitted for funding consideration by the Ministry of Defence. The hackathon aimed to foster breakthroughs in generative AI for defense applications and support the development of proofs of concept.
