ScanEagle Takes Off From Italian Navy Frigate For The First Time

In November 2023, the Italian Navy achieved a significant milestone with the completion of the first Mini RPAS (remotely piloted aerial system) ScanEagle flight from the FREMM first-of-class Carlo Bergamini. This achievement followed months of preparation, including flight test and evaluation in the Mar Grande Naval Base and the Gulf of Taranto. Led by CDR Fabio Mariani, the UAV Department Chief, the RPAS Section embarked on ITS Bergamini during the NATO exercise Dynamic Mariner and Mare Aperto 23-2. The successful day and night RPAS sorties on November 3 marked the culmination of a journey that began in 2017, aiming to equip the Italian Navy Fleet with advanced technology for enhanced Maritime Situation Awareness. Overcoming technical challenges and completing extensive training in the United States, the Italian Navy now possesses a more flexible and effective capability, contributing to greater integration between naval ship capabilities in the context of evolving international geopolitical developments.
