France will hunt radars with drone swarms copying an aircraft’s RCS

The French Agency for Defense Innovation (AID) is leading the ASSYDUS project in collaboration with Thales DMS France SAS and the Research Laboratory for Computer Sciences Bordelais (LaBRI). The project focuses on developing an Autonomous Decoy System Using UAV Swarms to counteract adversary air defenses. By aligning drones in swarm formations that mimic the Radar Cross Section (RCS) of an aircraft or battle drone, the goal is to deceive potential opponents' anti-aircraft defense systems. Early results indicate success in achieving the desired RCS through flight trials, with the potential use of dispatching drones sequentially towards an air defense system and clustering them to simulate the RCS of a fighter bomber. This initiative echoes a 2020 RAF experiment involving a squadron of drones armed with electronic warfare modules to deceive and overload radars simulating adversarial air defense systems.
