Air force chiefs confront era of AI, technological disruption
At the Dubai International Air Chiefs’ Conference, a prelude to the Dubai air show, leaders including UAE's Brigadier General Azzan Ali A Al Nuaimi and Italy's Lieutenant General Luca Goretti addressed the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in air force operations. Nuaimi highlighted the need to adapt decision-making processes in air forces, moving from traditional hierarchy-based systems to those integrating AI for enhanced data-driven decisions while maintaining a balance with human judgment. Goretti shared insights from Italy's use of the Leonardo M-346 trainer, preparing cadets for data-intensive operations with advanced jets like the F-35, underscoring the shift towards data management in piloting fifth-generation aircraft. The discussions also touched on the necessity of realistic simulations that include various combat threats and the importance of collaborative combat between manned and AI-operated crafts to achieve technological superiority. Additionally, Air Vice-Marshal Glen Braz of the Royal Australian Air Force noted the challenges posed by the increasing volume of data for commanders and the crucial need for human-machine collaboration to process intelligence swiftly and effectively.
