AI poses growing threat to next general election, warns UK cyber security agency
The UK's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has issued a warning that advancements in artificial intelligence, specifically deepfake videos and other disinformation tactics, present a significant threat to the integrity of the UK's next general election, due by January 2025. The report emphasizes the risk of countries like Russia interfering in this and other Western democratic processes. Despite the UK's paper voting system providing some defense, the forthcoming election will be the first to confront the full spectrum of AI's capabilities to amplify traditional methods of interference. This includes rapid spread of false information online and sophisticated deepfake campaigns. The NCSC also highlights the evolved threat landscape since 2019, exacerbated by Russia's war with Ukraine, which has increased the attractiveness of influencing democratic discourse for state actors. Additionally, the emergence of cyber actors ideologically aligned with malign states adds a new layer of threat. The UK government has responded by establishing a Defending Democracy Taskforce and a Joint Election Security Preparedness unit, while also acknowledging ongoing cyber threats from China, Iran, and North Korea.
