Moog developing autonomous hybrid eVTOL for military missions
Moog, in collaboration with the U.S. Air Force's Agility Prime program, recently completed a flight test campaign focused on the S250 unmanned aircraft system (UAS) testbed, with the goal of advancing autonomous hybrid-electric vehicles for military applications. The campaign aimed to expand the flight test envelope, mitigate risk, and demonstrate the viability of large unmanned aircraft. Moog plans to leverage the insights gained from these tests to develop the HE350 Recluse, an autonomous, hybrid-electric vehicle intended to replace manned rotorcraft for missions in contested environments. This initiative is expected to provide agile sustainment and enable point-and-click navigation, extending the user base beyond highly skilled pilots. Moog sees potential applications in both military and commercial markets, with an emphasis on cargo transport and logistics, and anticipates the introduction of an all-electric prototype in 2024, followed by a hybrid-electric powerplant in 2025.
