Study Shows First-Ever Successful Deep-Brain Implant of Computer Chip in Living Animal

Published on November 1, 2023

Julian E. Bailes, a neurosurgeon and co-director of the NorthShore University HealthSystem, has published a groundbreaking study demonstrating the successful deep-brain placement of a brain-computer interface (BCI) microchip into a living animal without apparent neurological effects. The study describes the methodology for the successful implantation of an integrated circuit (IC) into the deep subcortical brain space, investigating how the mammalian brain would accept or reject the IC. This achievement could open the door to new treatments for various neurological disorders. The study used NICO BrainPath, a navigated trans-sulcal access technology. BCIs are of growing interest in neurosurgery, and NICO's technology enables deep-brain access, potentially revolutionizing the field by allowing treatment of subcortical regions.
