The German Bundeswehr is set to enhance its underwater reconnaissance capabilities through a newly signed contract with ATLAS Elektronik GmbH, which involves the acquisition of four autonomous drones, integrated into minehunting vessels for improved seabed scanning using advanced synthetic aperture sonar technology. This initiative, beginning in 2024, marks a significant advancement in national and alliance defence, offering detailed underwater data, quicker response times for mine countermeasures, and a tripling of the area search performance compared to current capabilities. The first drone is expected by late 2024, with complete integration, including a tailored training and testing facility, spare parts, and additional modules, anticipated by mid-2026, thereby streamlining decision-making processes at all defence levels.
