UK Dstl adopts UAV-mounted sensor concept for mine clearance

Published on October 17, 2023

Engineers from the UK Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) are researching a drone solution for mine clearance. The drone, equipped with a sensor payload, aims to detect hidden explosive ordnance to clear mined areas faster and more safely. Dstl's efforts contribute to NATO's STO Research Task Group SCI-321, focusing on the potential, limitations, and challenges of using unmanned aerial vehicles for target detection in military search operations. The UK Ministry of Defence sees this concept as having the potential to significantly enhance protection for Armed Forces personnel on the battlefield. Trials and collaboration with international partners are ongoing to advance this technology and address the pervasive threat of landmines, particularly in conflict zones like Ukraine.
