EU to assess risks of critical technologies being weaponised -official
The European Commission is set to evaluate the potential weaponization risks of four pivotal technologies: semiconductors, artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, and biotechnologies like vaccines and genome sequencing. This decision is a component of the European Union's economic security strategy initiated in June and mirrors similar precautions adopted by the U.S., Australia, and other nations in response to China's growing influence. By the year's end, risk assessments for these technologies will be conducted in collaboration with EU member states. To address these concerns in the coming year, the EU may consider implementing export controls and forming alliances with ideologically aligned partners. This initiative stems from the EU's endeavor to lessen its reliance on countries like China for essential products, a move influenced by supply chain disturbances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine conflict which led to an energy crisis in Europe.
