DIU asks industry about affordable, mass-produced unmanned aerial systems
The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) is actively soliciting the defense industry for proposals regarding the production of affordable, medium-range unmanned aerial delivery vehicles with an open architecture. This comes on the heels of the Pentagon's recent announcement of its initiative to challenge China's increasing military might through the deployment of numerous autonomous systems. The DIU highlighted the current limitations of the Department of Defense's procurement rate for these unmanned vehicles, citing issues with scalability, high costs, and slow production rates due to intricate components. The specifications laid out by the DIU include the drone's capability to fly a minimum of 500 nautical miles, feature integrated sensors and modular payloads, and deliver kinetic payloads. Notably, this move follows Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks' unveiling of the Replicator initiative, which aims to mass-produce several thousand "attritable autonomous systems" in under two years. The overarching challenge is the effective scaling of emerging technology to meet defense demands.
