US Senators Propose Bipartisan Federal Legislation Targeting AI Use

Published on October 7, 2023

This week, senators have proposed two bipartisan pieces of legislation that target the use of AI, one focused on advancing military use and the other focused on tackling the issue of identity fraud.

Senators Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Bill Cassidy (R-La.) introduced the "POST ID Act" this week, a bipartisan legislation that would empower the United States Postal Service to offer ID verification services to the private sector. The bill would facilitate the USPS to provide authenticators to individuals, conduct identity verification across USPS locations, and levy charges to cover the related costs. The intent is to utilize AI capabilities to combat identity fraud. Another bipartisan legislation, introduced by senators Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Mike Rounds (R-S.D.), focuses on bolstering military AI adoption. This bill proposes the establishment of a governing council, led by the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Officer, to guide the Department of Defense's AI initiatives and ensure data authority for a strategic edge over adversaries. Both pieces reflect the broader federal emphasis on effectively integrating AI in various capacities, with a clear aim to regulate its applications while capitalizing on its advantages.
