The maritime domain is witnessing a revolutionary shift as the U.S. Navy integrates autonomous systems to confront modern warfare challenges. Emphasizing the potential of unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) for enhanced domain awareness, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) aims to deploy a hundred USVs for surveillance purposes in the Gulf by the end of 2023. Moreover, the U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), which oversees a vast maritime area, is set to employ this innovative technology to maximize available resources. Although USVs promise cost-effectiveness and efficient surveillance capabilities, they are not a replacement for traditional naval operations. Challenges such as funding and data management still persist, underscoring the need for strategic planning to harness the full potential of USVs in maritime operations.
