The US Navy will employ autonomous vessels in a new region—but integrating the tech won’t be easy
Published on September 28, 2023
The US Navy is exploring the integration of unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) into its operations in the waters under the responsibility of US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) in Central and South America. With limited military assets in the region, USVs offer a cost-effective solution for enhancing maritime domain awareness, supporting counter-narcotic and illegal fishing missions. However, challenges such as the need for consistent funding, integration with traditional naval assets, and data management must be addressed for successful USV deployment. Deliberate planning and strategic communication are essential to maximize the benefits of USVs in this region.
