ADF chief warns of ‘truth decay’ in talk touching on AI and disinformation
General Angus Campbell, Australia's Chief of the Defence Force, warned about the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in disinformation campaigns by state actors like Russia and China. In a speech to the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, he discussed the escalated risks to Western democracies due to AI-enhanced disinformation tools, such as bots, troll farms, and deepfakes. Campbell stressed that these technologies could make it increasingly difficult for the public to discern fact from fiction, accelerating "truth decay" and eroding public trust in key institutions and elected officials. He noted that Russia's use of AI and social media has already had a disruptive effect on elections and public opinion, while China employs disinformation as part of a larger strategy to "win without fighting."
