U.S Navy To Carry Out Biggest Overhaul of Its Top-Secret Undersea Surveillance Network To Counter China
The U.S. Navy has been investing billions of dollars to revamp its Cold War-time submarine detection system in the Pacific Ocean as China enhances its navy and seems more belligerent.
The U.S. Navy is undertaking its largest overhaul of the Integrated Undersea Surveillance System, a secretive network originally designed during the Cold War. This modernization comes as China aggressively expands its naval capabilities. Notably, the overhaul incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze surveillance data for anomalies and potential foreign craft, a task that AI can perform much faster than human analysts. The new system also involves fleets of unmanned drones equipped with advanced sensors, enhancing the Navy's ability to patrol large areas of the Pacific for submarine activity. Multiple contracts related to this mission have been signed in recent years, involving defense giants and startups specializing in unmanned sea drones and AI processing.
