ISS Aerospace wins £500k contract for turbine powered Heavy-Lift Unmanned Aircraft System

Published on September 20, 2023

ISS Aerospace has secured a £500,000 grant from the UK’s Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) and InnovateUK to develop a vertical take-off and landing Heavy-Lift Unmanned Aircraft System (HLUAS) utilizing a hybrid-electric gas turbine powerplant. The aim is to provide extended range, endurance, and a payload significantly greater than current rechargeable Lithium Polymer batteries, outperforming crewed alternatives. The HLUAS is set to offer a payload of up to 250kg and a potential range of approximately 100km, serving defense, security, commercial, and offshore support purposes without requiring a runway. The system will support adaptable software, payload interfaces, and diverse cargo types integration while meeting stringent civil and military aviation airworthiness requirements.
