‘DIU 3.0,’ now under SecDef review, aims to embed teams in the combatant commands.

The Pentagon's Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) is set for a significant revamp under its new director, Doug Beck, a former Apple executive and Navy Reserve captain. With a strategy termed 'DIU 3.0' now under review by the Secretary of Defense, the DIU aims to extend its reach into the combatant commands, going beyond its traditional liaison roles. Beck emphasizes the importance of embedding DIU teams directly into military units to identify problems and implement commercial technological solutions at scale. This shift marks a new level of relevance for the DIU, which has previously turned nearly half of its prototypes into products used across the Defense Department. The strategy also aligns with immediate priorities, such as expanding DIU’s presence in Europe Command amid Russia's war on Ukraine and integrates key components of the National Security Innovation Network (NSIN) directly under DIU leadership. This change comes as the DIU potentially faces a billion-dollar budget in 2024 and looks to bring venture-capitalist practices to solve military problems more effectively.
