Marines overhaul approach to smart robots, eye new military job

The U.S. Marine Corps is revamping its approach to autonomous and robotic technology by consolidating all unmanned system efforts under a new initiative called "Intelligent Robotics and Autonomous Systems" (IRAS). Led by Maj. Keenan Chirhart, the initiative aims to streamline the acquisition of new technologies and integrate them across all operational domains. One proposal under consideration is a common mission controller for all unmanned systems, including aerial drones, ground vehicles, and surface vessels. The Marines are also developing an experimentation roadmap and considering new military occupations specializing in autonomous systems. The move aims to keep pace with rapidly evolving technology and potentially hostile actors, although the slow acquisition process remains a significant obstacle.
