Japan plans new missile for fighter jet project with Britain

Published on August 31, 2023

Japan is collaborating with the United Kingdom and Italy to design a new air-to-air missile, aiming for initial deployment by 2035 on next-generation, sixth-generation stealth fighter jets. This development is part of the Global Combat Air Program (GCAP), a multinational initiative to advance fighter technology. The new missile is expected to offer improved performance at a lower cost compared to the European Meteor missile currently in use. Although Japan aims to use domestically developed missiles initially, plans are also being considered to incorporate missiles used by British and Italian aircraft in the future. Notably, this marks the first time Japan has collaborated on defense equipment development with countries other than the United States.
