US curbs AI chip exports from Nvidia and AMD to some Middle East countries
Published on August 31, 2023
The U.S. government has extended export restrictions on advanced artificial intelligence chips produced by Nvidia and AMD to include certain countries in the Middle East. Previously focused on curbing exports to China, the restrictions target specific chip models designed for machine learning tasks. While both Nvidia and AMD suggest that the move will not immediately impact their revenue, the reason behind expanding the export controls remains unclear. The export restrictions usually serve national security objectives, and in the past, aimed to limit the technological capabilities of China in military applications. The U.S. Commerce Department has not yet commented on the new measures.
