Meet 'Pibot,' the humanoid robot that can safely pilot an airplane better than a human

Published on August 22, 2023

Engineers and researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology are developing "Pibot," a groundbreaking humanoid robot capable of piloting aircraft without cockpit modifications.

Pibot's advanced AI and dexterous control technology allow it to manipulate flight instruments, even under intense vibrations. The robot can memorize complex manuals and all Jeppesen aeronautical navigation charts worldwide, a feat beyond human capability. Pibot's adaptability across various aircraft and the ability to quickly switch between different airplane configurations enhance its efficiency.

The research team expects Pibot to excel in emergency situations, responding faster than human pilots and calculating real-time safe routes based on aircraft status. The robot, also designed for terrestrial applications, can replace humans in roles like operating tanks and commanding ships. Although still in development, Pibot is anticipated to be completed by 2026, with potential military applications on the horizon.
