Employing artificial intelligence for joint operations and the edge continuum

The US Department of Defense's (DOD) Joint All-Domain Command and Control (JADC2) strategy emphasizes the integration of command and control capabilities across domains. This paper presents a four-layer edge computing architecture for the DOD based on the JADC2 decision-cycle vision: "sense" (integrate information), "make sense" (leverage intelligence), and "act" (decide and disseminate). The architecture employs data, artificial intelligence (AI), and the edge continuum. The layers include Tactical Edge, Operational Edge, Command Edge, and Strategic/Enterprise Edge. The architecture aims to enable real-time data analysis and decision-making in denied and degraded environments, ensuring reliable and secure decision-making across various edge layers for data-centric warfare and maintaining information and decision advantage.
