DoD CDAO’s “Task Force Lima” to Explore Responsible Fielding of Generative AI Capabilities

The Department of Defense (DoD) has established Task Force Lima, a generative artificial intelligence (AI) initiative led by the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO), to analyze and integrate generative AI tools, including large language models (LLMs), throughout the DoD. Deputy Secretary of Defense Dr. Kathleen Hicks directed the formation of the task force to ensure responsible and strategic utilization of AI capabilities while safeguarding national security. Task Force Lima, in collaboration with various offices including the Algorithmic Warfare Directorate and the Chief Information Officer, will assess and synchronize generative AI capabilities, fostering innovation, implementation, education, and a responsible culture of AI adoption within the DoD. The task force's outcomes will contribute to the Responsible AI Working Council and drive coordinated engagement with partners from various sectors.
