Space Force extends Wallaroo’s contract for on-orbit AI applications
Artificial intelligence startup Wallaroo.ai has been awarded a $1.5 million contract by the U.S. Space Force to advance the development of machine learning models tailored for edge computers deployed in orbit.
Wallaroo.AI, in partnership with New Mexico State University, secured the Small Business Technology Transfer Phase 2 contract as part of the Orbital Prime program, which aims to enhance space debris cleanup and on-orbit services. The New York-based company specializes in deploying machine learning models at the edge, leveraging radiation-tolerant integrated circuits to navigate the challenging space environment.
This initiative addresses the pressing need for AI and machine learning capabilities that can operate both in the cloud and at the edge, thereby transforming space automation through applications such as refueling, robotics, and satellite protection from debris.
