Romania eyes 32 F-35s under $6.5 billion deal

The Romanian Ministry of National Defence has sought parliamentary approval for the purchase of 32 F-35 Lightning II fighter jets, a deal estimated at around $6.5 billion, as part of efforts to equip the Romanian Air Force with advanced capabilities, enhancing its status within NATO's eastern flank and the Black Sea region. The potential procurement, which could make Romania the third Eastern European nation to operate the F-35 after Poland and the Czech Republic, is set to be carried out under the foreign military sales framework and is subject to approval from the U.S. Department of State. The acquisition could pave the way for a potential third squadron of 16 fighter jets, with expectations that the first aircraft could be received by Romania's military in 2030.
