Pentagon’s counter-drone office to demo swarm destruction in 2024
The Pentagon's counter-drone office, led by Maj. Gen. Sean Gainey, plans to focus its next demonstration in June 2024 on neutralizing swarms of unmanned aircraft, given the rising threat of drone proliferation on the battlefield, particularly in cases like Ukraine where coordinated drone attacks pose challenges. The office aims to address this threat with a layered approach, combining electronic warfare capabilities, high-powered microwaves, kinetic interceptors, and more. The office recently released a request for whitepapers from industry to demonstrate capabilities against small UAS swarm systems. The counter-drone office has conducted several demonstrations since its creation in late 2019, with a focus on countering small drones, low-cost interceptors, and high-power microwaves, among other techniques. The U.S. military has already provided counter-drone capabilities to Ukraine, including electronic warfare systems and low-cost interceptors, while also exploring counter-UAS as a service through various branches like the Marine Corps and Special Operations Command.
