Hensoldt unveils a deployable package of its Twinvis passive radar

Published on August 10, 2023

German sensor specialist Hensoldt has introduced a standalone version of its Twinvis passive radar technology designed to detect stealth-optimized aircraft, with four undisclosed customers placing orders for the system, known as Twinvis Sheltered. The technology operates covertly, relying on signals from civilian digital TV and FM radio stations reflected by targets, making it difficult to detect and target. Hensoldt previously gained attention for claiming to track the stealthy F-35 at an air show in 2018, though passive radar's ability to pick up airwave disturbances caused by airframes presents potential advancements in stealth detection. The German military has shown interest in this emerging technology, considering it a gap-filler for situations where active radars cannot be used.
