US approves $395 million upgrade of Finland’s M270 rocket launchers

The U.S. government has approved a contract worth up to $395 million to upgrade Finland's M270 multiple-launch rocket systems to the M270A2 standard. The upgrade includes modernized communication systems, machine gun mounts, integration of a battle management system, a new 600 horsepower engine, fire control system, and improved armored cab. The modifications will allow the launchers to fire next-gen munitions such as Extended-Range GMLRS and Precision Strike Missiles. Finland has purchased a total of 40 M270 launchers over the years, and the upgrade comes as a response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with Finland becoming the newest member of NATO in April.
